Why do we need to run an assessment?

Organizations use Assessment Center at key times, including:

  • Selecting candidates for management positions
  • Developing a group of supervisors and managers
  • Seeking individuals for executive or board member roles
  • Set a development plan for employees

During the assessment, the company’s objective is to demonstrate that candidate’s competencies are appropriate for his/her role. This is achieved by performing a variety of exercises that are designed to assess candidate practical ability and to show that he/she operates at the appropriate level for each of the required role competencies.

Assessments ‘tell’ evaluators that a candidate has/hasn’t specific competencies. Most organizations use an ‘Assessment Center’ or ‘Development Center’ to conduct these exercises.

Each assessment is unique because it is dependent on the culture of the organization as well as the specific requirements of the role for which candidates are being assessed. Successful organizations ensure that their development efforts are invested in those individuals who are most likely to succeed and most closely match their culture.

Organizations utilize Assessment Centers to build on their ‘competency framework’ and utilize it to assess their existing employees as well as new recruits. This framework defines which competencies are required for each role and how these differ depending on the management level and responsibilities of the role.

Every member of the organization must possess both, the company core, and role based competencies. For each competency in the framework there is a detailed explanation of the behaviors that are needed to perform the role efficiently and effectively.
